Save the Crucian Carp – a mobile app helping protect biodiversity
About the project
- Cross-platform mobile app with intuitive interface
- Gamified elements to encourage public engagement
- Effective and accessible tool for nature conservation
The project bridges the gap between researchers and the public, with a mission to protect a native fish species at risk of extinction.
The app allows users to quickly report sightings directly from their phone — including location, GPS coordinates, photos, and comments. For scientists, it provides a valuable source of field data. For the public, it offers a simple and meaningful way to contribute to environmental efforts — all in just a few taps.
Challenges
- Reliable integration with the website backend
- Visually appealing yet functional app design
- Cost-effective development and long-term sustainability
The original tool – developed by a third party – no longer met performance expectations or user needs. The decision was made to create a completely new solution. The challenge was not only to modernize the interface but also to maintain service continuity during the transition.
The result: a robust digital product, built for high-demand environments, real-time delivery, and long-term growth.
Our solution
- Initial analysis and technical documentation
- Scalable architecture with modern UX/UI
- Cost efficiency through React Native and WordPress integration
From the first analysis to launch on both the App Store and Google Play, our team delivered a lightweight but robust solution. The frontend was built using React Native, enabling fast deployment across iOS and Android.
Frontend aplikace je postaven na React Native pro snadnou multiplatformní distribuci. Backend zajišťuje klientův WordPress portál s REST API, které jsme využili pro autentizaci i správu hlášení. The backend runs on the client’s existing WordPress platform, with a custom REST API for authentication and report management.
This setup offers efficiency, transparency, and low operating costs — while staying ready for future expansion.
Technology stack
Impact
- Fully integrated with the website
- Simple, accessible reporting of endangered species
- Built to grow with custom features and public engagement
The app acts as a digital bridge between citizens and scientists. Users can quickly report sightings and follow their contributions via leaderboards and stats. The collected data is then available for further scientific analysis and decision-making.
The Save the Crucian Carp! project demonstrates how thoughtful design and smart technology can create real environmental impact — turning everyday people into active participants in conservation.
