Renomia: an ecosystem of internal applications unified by a design system

Renomia maintains a large number of specialized internal applications: contract management, claims reporting, vehicle insurance, partner websites, and a client zone. Each one had been built with its own visual rules, which affected both usability and team efficiency.
We built the SHIELD design system as a single source of truth. It keeps every application aligned on the same visual and interaction logic, while making it faster to build new modules.
Challenges
Renomia’s digital environment consists of dozens of specialized applications, built at different times with different visual rules and technical constraints. Over time, this fragmentation started to affect the user experience, team efficiency, and the pace at which individual systems could evolve.

The core challenge was to build a unified foundation that could serve internal teams, business processes, and customer scenarios alike – while allowing the whole ecosystem to scale long-term without unnecessary complexity or duplication.

Renomia needed a stable, unified foundation for dozens of applications built across different teams and technologies.
Inconsistent approaches were complicating onboarding, slowing down development, and increasing the risk of errors in critical insurance processes. The goal was to build a system that would unify the visual language, speed up design work, and bring more precision to how internal teams operate, while improving the overall UX across applications.

Over the years, many applications had been built with different visual styles, structures, and levels of detail. Some had their own custom components; others relied on older versions of the Universum design system.
On top of that came the specific needs of B2B scenarios (complex forms, tables, process logic) and B2C elements (simplicity, fast orientation). The design system needed to cover all of this while staying easy to extend.

- Connecting the designs to Storybook, Supernova, and Renomia's development pipeline as a whole
Many older applications couldn’t be updated retroactively due to their dependencies on internal processes or technical constraints. That meant the design system had to be versionable, compatible, and able to run in parallel across multiple generations of applications.
At the same time, the designs had to be built so Renomia’s internal developers could easily translate them into Storybook and maintain them long-term, regardless of each project’s technology stack.

Impact
Overall, we helped improve the UX and UI across Renomia’s entire application portfolio.
We built SHIELD, a design system that brings together typography, color, components, and patterns that can be reused across many Renomia projects. Users now work in an environment with a consistent visual language, structure, and behavior.
At the same time, this sped up development and made the applications easier to maintain going forward.
